Yoga Class Descriptions
Gentle Yoga
Classes focus on body mechanics and alignment, emphasizing
safety. We incorporate the depth and strength of longer held poses,
using props with brief intervals of Vinyasas. The class is suitable for
beginning to intermediate levels and includes pranayama (yogic breathing
practice) and meditation.
Slow Flow, Hatha Flow, and Vinyasa Flow
The word Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement.” The
teacher instructs you to move from one pose to the next on an inhale or
an exhale. This technique is sometimes also called Flow yoga because of
the smooth way that the poses run together. A Cat-Cow Stretch is an
example of a very simple Vinyasa, because the spine is arched on an
inhale and rounded on an exhale. A Sun Salutation sequence is an example
of a more complex Vinyasa. Each pose in the sequence is connected with
an inhalation or an exhalation allowing the body to build heat to warm,
relax and lengthen the muscles deeper into the postures.
This style of yoga allows for a lot of variation in the classes and our
yoga classes at Soja are no exception. You will encounter dynamic
movement and well-balanced sequencing with some deeply held poses
whether it’s slower paced (we call it Slow Flow), moderately paced (we
call it Hatha Flow), or a slightly more vigorous pace (which we call
Vinyasa Flow). Over time you will build endurance, flexibility, strength
and mental focus.
Because this is a creative form of yoga, many forms and practices of
movement inspire us as teachers and influence the lessons and sequencing
we bring to our yoga classes. We invite you to read the instructor bios
and try different classes to find what fits your needs. Our online
calendar also includes personal descriptions from each of our
instructors about their classes, please click on individual classes on
the online calendar. Most of all we want you to listen to your body and breath, and tune in to your own personal flow.
Your individual needs are important to us. As you come to class
regularly, we will get to know you and will work with you to develop
your practice.
You can also use this system as a guide:
1 – Beginner (learning the fundamentals of the practice, no experience required)
2 – Continuing Beginner-Intermediate (developing strength, stamina and flexibility. Inversions, backbends and handstands are introduced at this level.)
3 – Intermediate-Advanced (cultivating the full physical expression of poses and absorption of the mind in the rhythm of breath and body)
Wherever you are in your practice we can provide modifications, adjustments, and enhancements with or without props.

Congratulate yourself! Come to class with an open mind, a willingness to move your body and try new things. Everyone practices with his or her own safety in mind. Our teachers are here to offer strength-building options, modifications or alternate poses that work best for your body. Your first several classes may be challenging and confusing, but give it your best try and come back. Before you know it you will gain a familiarity with the sequences to keep you flowing!
What if I'm not flexible?
Everybody practices with his or her own unique body architecture in mind. You can work to own degree of ability. Some poses you will find easy and others more challenging. Talk to your instructor for guidance, safety and injury prevention. We want you healthy and coming back many times.
Can I practice while pregnant?
You can enjoy the benefits of yoga while you are pregnant. First, see your doctor. Next, listen to your body. Our classes are all levels and anyone can practice, but special modifications should be made in some poses. Please notify your teacher that you are pregnant.
Will this class be challenging?
Yoga can be a very challenging practice and you are encouraged to work
at your own pace and level. The intensity level is up to you. A resting
pose is offered for you to take at any time.
