The foundation of the Soja core curriculum is based on several basic principles:

Physical Development and Athletic Skills: development of balance, strength, agility. Within a short period of time students become stronger, better balanced, and more graceful. Emphasis is placed on the ability to flow through a wide variety of positions and postures.

Martial Art Skills: Soja's system is based on avoiding conflict and blending with the energy of one's partner or opponent. Students learn how to work with rather than against the energy of their partner/opponent.

Self Defense Skills: Soja self defense is based on the application of martial skills and awareness through the use of scenario based training. Students learn to effectively and appropriately manage harassment and intimidation through assertiveness skills and threat awareness. More advanced levels include awareness training for personal safety and scenario based self defense against a single attacker, ground defense, defense against multiple attackers, and against weapons.

Philosophical & Ethical Principles: Soja has a strong ethical base that emphasizes the development of character and integrity. Solid character and self-esteem is built upon the self-knowledge and comes from honesty interacting with others and facing and learning from life challenges. Other values include patience, perseverance, loyalty, honesty, discipline, bravery, humor, compassion, and responsibility.

Social/Interpersonal/Leadership Skills: Soja's system teaches cooperation rather than competition. Students grow only as much as her/his partner can challenge and support them. Therefore all Soja students and teachers have an investment in the growth of others. As part of a learning process, students learn to forthrightly acknowledge their weaknesses and limitations.

The first class is free and no prior martial arts experience is required.
